KwaZulu-Natal - Battlefields
KwaZulu-Natal - Battlefields Travel Directory
General Information
Zulu wars, Shaka, Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, Colenso, Spioenkop, Ladysmith, Dundee, Churchill, Blood River, Cetshwayo, Boers ... these are some of the more well known terms which are associated with the internationally renowned KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields area of South Africa.
Walk in the footsteps of famous military strategists - Shaka, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and General Louis Botha - they were all part of the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields.
Today where it appears to be little more than wind-swept plains, the land is filled with the remains of stone forts, graveyards and little else to indicate strife and the battles that were fought here. Why leave all of this to the imagination? There are tour guides to accompany you hosting tours of the Battlefields, who can tell you about each battle, how many died, debate the strategies used and earned medals and what rewards were won by the brave. It is easy to immerse yourself in the story told, and if you have a vivid imagination you will almost be able to hear the rifle shots, smell the smoke and see the clash of those in combat.
Although the area is well sign-posted and easy to navigate, most tourists find it better to hire a guide. Specialist guides enhance your experience sharing their wealth of local knowledge bringing to life tales of the past.
