Estcourt

General Information

Estcourt is a large town which serves as the gateway to the Giant's Castle region of the Drakensberg and the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields.  Initially named Bushman’s River, Estcourt was renamed in honour of an English parliamentarian who enabled immigration settlers into the area.

Estcourt has a turbulent past beginning with the murder of Piet Retief.  This and other memorial sites are showcased in and around the town.  Hiking is a firm favourite in this area with the fairly undiscovered New Formosa Nature Reserve less than 30 minutes away.  Perfect for birdwatching as well.  Other activities in Estcourt can be found under the activities directory which provides a comprehensive list of advertisers.
