Estcourt
General Information
Estcourt is a large town which serves as the gateway to the Giant's Castle region of the Drakensberg and the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields. Initially named Bushman’s River, Estcourt was renamed in honour of an English parliamentarian who enabled immigration settlers into the area.
Estcourt has a turbulent past beginning with the murder of Piet Retief. This and other memorial sites are showcased in and around the town. Hiking is a firm favourite in this area with the fairly undiscovered New Formosa Nature Reserve less than 30 minutes away. Perfect for birdwatching as well.
